Planning a Vintage 4×4 Adventure in Iceland

Ever scrolled through Instagram and found yourself daydreaming about traveling through those landscapes that look a little otherworldly, crossing rivers, parking your vintage 4×4 by a hidden waterfall and taking a dip in water that normally you’d think was way too cold, and soaking in hot springs?

Longing to take a vintage 4×4 adventure in Iceland?

Yeah, me too. For years, I’ve been building mood boards and Pinterest pins of the ultimate Icelandic adventure, and now, it’s time to turn those dreams into reality. The thing is, I want to do it in a vintage 4WD.

Why? I just think they’re better.

I see lots of Land Rovers on IG and on travel videos, so I now I just have to find out where they are getting them!

Planning a Vintage 4x4 Adventure in Iceland

The Ultimate Vintage 4×4 Adventure

Trekking through this rugged landscape in a vintage 4×4 vehicle, the kind that looks like itโ€™s been through some adventures (because it has) is the pinnacle of my dream.

The truck has character, the surroundings have character, and I’m looking to leave with a story to tell.

I really do think the vintage truck is the perfect companion for exploring the dramatic landscapes of Iceland.

Hereโ€™s what I think will make this trip unforgettable.

What Are The Top 4×4 Vehicles for an Icelandic Adventure?

I did a quick search on Google and it says there are a few standout vehicles to consider.

The top choices include Land Rover Defenders, Toyota Land Cruisers, Jeep Wranglers, and Nissan Patrols.

If you’ve read any of my posts before you know I’d rather drive a vintage Bronco but for the experience, I think I’ll choose the Land Rover or the Land Cruiser.

These guys all have decent off-road capabilities and room for organization, making them good for exploring Iceland’s unpredictable landscape. So, if you’re seeking an unforgettable journey, these vintage 4x4s are going to be the way to go.

Vehicle For Good

River Crossings

Nothing says adventure like fording a river in a classic 4×4. Did I just use the word fording? I did. Did I have to look up the difference between the words ford and Fjord? Wouldn’t you like to know?

If you’re wondering the difference is fording is when you drive through a shallow river, splashing your way across. A fjord, on the other hand, is about admiring the breathtaking views of deep, glacier-carved sea inletsโ€”no driving involved!

Icelandโ€™s highland roads are dotted with rivers waiting to be crossed. I get excited just thinking about navigating through the icy waters, feeling the power of the current against the tires.

Itโ€™s like natureโ€™s own obstacle course, designed just for me (and you if you choose to go!)

Majestic Waterfalls

Iceland is famous for its breathtaking waterfalls, each one more impressive than the last.
From the thundering Skรณgafoss to the serene Seljalandsfoss, you can park your 4×4 nearby and take in the sight and sound of cascading water. Trust me, photos donโ€™t do these natural wonders justice.

Also, good luck pronouncing them.

Surfing and Beaches

Yes, you read that rightโ€”surfing in Iceland! The black sand beaches offer a surfing experience thatโ€™s both challenging and exhilarating. Imagine catching a wave with snow-capped mountains as your backdrop all while driving your surf Bronco!

If surfing isnโ€™t your thing, the beaches themselves are something you need to see. Truly feels like you’re on another world.

Cold Plunge and Hot Springs

After a long day of driving and exploring, what could be better than a dip in a natural hot spring? Iceland is dotted with geothermal pools where you can soak away your fatigue under the open sky. There’s always the Blue Lagoon, but you’re not going to be alone there. Super popular. Lots of people. You can find a few hot springs that are more off the beaten path.

For the brave, thereโ€™s also always the option of a cold plunge in one of the glacial riversโ€”refreshing, invigorating, and definitely Instagram-worthy! I’d like to think that I would do it but I’m not going to say with any certainty that I will. Looks so cold!

Living the Icelandic Dream

Iโ€™ve never been to Iceland, but itโ€™s something Iโ€™ve always dreamed of doing. I think it’s the kind of vintage 4×4 adventure in Iceland you see photos of in magazines or on social media and think, “I want that to be me someday.” Iโ€™ve always wanted to camp in the back of an old 4×4, seeing things I’ve only seen online, and living out the Pinterest mood board I created years ago. Trying to make it romantic? Look at our truck bed date night checklist.

And thatโ€™s what planning this trip is all aboutโ€”turning those dreams into reality. Itโ€™s about more than just seeing beautiful places; itโ€™s about experiencing them in a way thatโ€™s personal, raw, and real. Itโ€™s about the thrill of the unknown, the joy of discovery, and the freedom of the open road. Will we break down? Who knows.
